Eat Together

Some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “We eat but are not satisfied.” He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Perhaps you eat separately.” The Companions replied in the affirmative. He then said: “Eat together and mention the name of Allah over your food. It will be blessed for you.” [Abu Dawud]

Islam promotes a family culture. All the members of the family should sit together to eat. Normally each person is busy doing their share of work, men outside the house and women inside the house. Meal times are the time that they can all get together for a little while, talk to eat other, exchange their thoughts and increase each other in their love of Allah and Islam.

This hadith tells us additional benefits of eating together. When Muslims eat together their hunger gets satisfied and Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) blesses their subsistence. If they live individualistically, and eat separately, then they can expect the opposite to happen

Have Book But Knowledge Is Lost

Imam Ahmed narrates that Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said regarding something: “That would happen when knowledge is lost.” One of the Sahabah asked, “O Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), how could knowledge be lost when we have studied the Quran, we are teaching it to our children and our children will teach it to theirs.” Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wasallam) said: “Woe to you! I thought you were one of the most learned men of Medinah. Can’t you see the Jews and Christians are not benefiting even though they have their scriptures (Torah and Injeel) right with them?”

This hadith makes clear that if there is no application of the Quran, its recitation becomes useless. If we know what the Quran contains but don't apply it, we become like donkeys carrying books as our burdens, not benefitting from our loads.

How did the Sahabah study the Quran? If we take the example of Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu), it took him 14 years to finish memorizing Surah Baqarah. He was so happy after he completed memorizing it that he slaughtered a camel and invited all the people to come celebrate with him.

Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was a companion of Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) and the Quran was revealed in his own language. Abdullah ibn Umar (radiAllahu anhu) was also an eminent scholar. Then how is it that he took 14 years to memorize what is done nowadays by Muslims in a matter of months?

This is because the way that the Sahabah would study the Quran is that they would take ten ayaat at a time only. They would study these ten ayaat, study the eemaan, the ilm, the halal and the haram in these ayaat. They would memorize the ayaat and apply its rulings to their lives. They would not move onto the next ten ayaat until they had brought their lives into compliance with the first ten. The Quran thus became alive and second nature to them, its knowledge was not wasted and lost.

Bad Dream

Narrated Abu Salama: I used to see a dream which would make me sick till I heard Abu Qatadah saying, “I, too, used to see a dream which would make me sick till I heard the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) saying, ‘A good dream is from Allah, so if anyone of you saw a dream which he liked, he should not tell it to anybody except to the one whom he loves, and if he saw a dream which he disliked, then he should seek refuge with Allah from its evil and from the evil of Shaitan, and spit three times (on his left) and should not tell it to anybody, for it will not harm him.’” [#7044: The Book of the Interpretation of Dreams: Sahih Bukhari]

This hadith provides guidelines regarding what to do with dreams. The first comforting thing we are told is that bad dreams are nothing to fear. Rather than get upset and worried after having a nightmare, we are told not to fret over it as bad dreams are from Shaitan and have no power to harm us should we follow the advice of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). What we should do when we awaken from a bad dream is seek Allah’s refuge from the evil in the dream and from the evil of Shaitan and then spit (lightly) three times to the left. Once we have done that and placed our trust in Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) then we can forget about the dream for it will have no power to harm us. It is crucial though that one not tell a bad dream to anybody either.

As far as good dreams are concerned, we should also exercise caution with them. If we must tell the dream to anybody, then to safeguard a good outcome from a good dream, we should only tell it to those whom we love and trust and are sure harbour no ill feelings or jealousy towards us.

Be Useful: Live Longer

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "Nothing keeps away the decree (of Allah) except prayer, and nothing increases the life (of man) except goodness; and man is only denied the provisions (of life) because of sins upon which he falls." [Ibn Majah] "Almsgiving extinguishes the wrath of Allah." [Tirmidhi]

This hadith tells us many important things:

1. If we want to prevent misfortunes, accidents, and bad things in general from happening to us, we should make dua. Dua alone has the power to stall some misfortune that was decreed to befall us.
2. If we want to live longer, then we should practice what Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) defines as goodness.
3. If we want our rizq/provisions to increase, we should not commit sins.
4. If we don't want to be punished by Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) for our sins, we should give sadaqa/charity.

Research suggests that those who spend 4-6 hours in various voluntary activities weekly live 6-8 years longer than those who don't. This is one of the benefits of helping others that modern research has revealed. There are hundreds of other benefits. Make yourself useful so that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) may let you live a few more years to serve His creation. [30 Second Successories by Faiez H. Seyal]
